What Is Different About Adult Treatment

The jaw is set

Adult jaws have stopped growing, so growth-modification options are off the table. The work is on tooth position, with surgery only for genuinely severe cases (see surgical orthodontics).

Compliance is usually easier

Adults wear Invisalign trays the full 22 hours a day, brush around brackets the way they were told, and turn up to appointments. The whole treatment usually moves faster as a result.

Hygiene matters more

Adult gum and bone tissue is less forgiving of plaque around brackets. Hygiene coaching and slightly more frequent cleanings are part of the plan.

Retainers are forever

Adult teeth shift back toward where they started if the retainer is not worn. Nightly retainer wear for the long haul is the trade-off for a result that lasts.

Teen & Adult Orthodontics FAQs

Is there an upper age limit for orthodontic treatment?

No. As long as teeth and gums are healthy, orthodontic treatment works at any adult age. Rivers Edge has treated patients in their 60s and 70s.

Does adult orthodontic treatment take longer than treatment for kids?

Not always - sometimes the opposite, because adult compliance is usually better. Length is driven by the case, not the age.

How much does adult orthodontic treatment cost?

Comparable to teen treatment, depending on the option chosen. Estimate at the free consult, with direct insurance billing and interest-free monthly financing.

Will Invisalign or clear braces be obvious to my coworkers?

With Invisalign, often not at all. With clear ceramic braces or Lightforce, much less than traditional metal.

Do adults need a referral for orthodontics?

No referral is required. Book the free consultation directly.
