Growth Modification

Growth Modification - Guiding Jaw Development at the Right Age

During a narrow window of childhood, the jaws are growing fast and can be gently steered. Small interventions during that window often prevent the need for extractions, complex braces, or jaw surgery years later.

The Tools of Growth Modification

Each appliance does one specific job. We pick the smallest tool that solves the problem.

Palatal expander

A removable or fixed appliance that widens the upper jaw to correct a crossbite, create space for crowded teeth, and often open up the airway. Most effective before the upper palate fuses (around age 12 to 14).

Functional appliances

Twin block, Herbst, and similar appliances that gently encourage the lower jaw to grow forward when a child's upper jaw is sitting too far ahead of the lower one.

Headgear (when really needed)

Used less often today than in the past, but still the right answer for specific cases of upper-jaw overgrowth.

Space maintainers

Holds the space when a baby tooth is lost early so the adult tooth has room to come in straight.

Why Timing Matters So Much

Growth modification works because the jaw is still pliable. Wait too long and the same problem needs either extractions or jaw surgery to fix. Catch it early and the answer is often a small appliance worn for a few months.

Growth Modification FAQs

What age is orthodontic growth modification done?

Typically between ages 7 and 12, while the jaws are actively growing and the upper palate has not fused.

Does growth modification treatment hurt?

It is uncomfortable for the first few days, similar to the first week of braces. Most kids adapt within a couple of weeks.

How long does growth modification treatment last?

Palatal expanders are typically worn 6 to 9 months; functional appliances 9 to 18 months.

Will my child still need braces after growth modification?

Often yes, but the case is usually simpler and shorter. Sometimes early growth modification prevents the need for braces entirely.

How much does growth modification cost?

Less than full braces - typically a smaller, time-bounded fee. Estimate provided at the free evaluation, with insurance billing and financing available.
